I'm can't help you except to suggest a little more info about yourself may assist.
Where you're from (country), languages, and what you want/enjoy from 'short breaks' and 'see more of'... Are you a mountain trekker or a beach b*m? :)

I want to try becoming a travel writer but I am not sure where to start. I am 30 about to be 31 in a March. My assumptions are you already have the funds necessary for travel.

Travel writers don't necessarily have to travel. They write for people who want to travel. That means you can write about things you know at home. To someone who hasn't been to North Carolina, that is exotic and interesting. We lived in NC for ten or eleven years and there is a lot to write about there. Greensboro is an interesting city and it's near Winston-Salem, another interesting place. You have mountains and beaches both in NC.

Start writing and use the money you make to visit other places that interest you. Don't wait until you can go someplace "interesting." Everyplace is interesting to someone.

Good luck.

I once met someone who worked as a travel writer for destinations overseas without leaving the country. She used to re-write other travel articles she'd read off the Web. I'm not sure what was more disappointing, the fact that she did it or the fact that the local rag paid her for the con.

Steve, I was suggesting the poster write about places she knows, not steal material from other people.

In theory, a good editor would catch something like that. It is certainly not legal, moral or ethical. It doesn't seem like it would be much fun either.

You don't have to travel to distant places to write about interesting sights. You can write about something in your own town. Writing about things makes you look at them differently and can make visiting the local museum, theater, shopping mall, whatever, much more interesting.
