Is there a simple way to delete old messages remaining in Trash?

I have some messages close to 4 years old.

I click on Delete but the message still hangs around in the Trash for years. Is there an Empty Trash choice?

  • Could be I am missing something.

It just stays in trash at the moment. There's no permanent delete option. Even if you could permanently delete it, it would just be deleted for you because it would still show for the sender as a sent message.
