Any suggestions for places to combine with a trip to Rome. We don't want to travel a long way from Rome and we want somewhere quieter that can be reached easily by public transport.
Thank you,
Irene

Tivoli and Ostia antica are the two places I would recommand close to Rome. Go and back in one day.

Agree with both Tivoli (Medieval Villa d'Este and Villa Gregoriana are in the centre, Roman Villa Adriana a bit further out) & Ostia Antica (a huge site, a sort of min-Pompeii without the crowds). Both are pretty straightforward by public transport.
Italy's high-speed trains mean lots of places such as Assisi, Florence, Naples...even Pompeii, with an early start...are feasible daytrips but if you haven't been to Tivoli and Ostia I'd suggest you focus on those. :-)

Thank you Leics. I am especially interested in Ostia Antica.
Tivoli looks lovely but my husband has mobility issues and I think there may be a lot of steep slopes there. Not sure.

Tivoli itself is ok...not particularly hilly. I visited both times using Metro + bus from Rome: the bus stops more or less outside the Villa d'Este. I think using the train involves a longer trek (or a taxi?).
Have a look at the villa plans on this official link to see whether they'll suit:
https://villae.cultura.gov.it/en/services/accessibility-for-people-with-disabilities/
Also decent accesibility info on this site:
https://disabledaccessibletravel.com/accessible-destinations/italy/accessible-rome/wheelchair-accessible-tivoli-villa-deste-and-villa-adriana-tour/
Ostia is about 10 minutes' level walk from the station but on arrival you need to go up, over and down the railway pedestrian bridge. The Ostia site is more-or-less flat throughout. There's quite a long (Roman) road from the entrance to the centre of the ancient town..maybe another 10/15 minutes? The site is almost all the original Roman surfaces or grass with the only modern surfaces being around the museum & cafe. More accessibility info on the official site:
https://www.ostiaantica.beniculturali.it/en/getting-here/ostia-antica-archaeological-park/accessibility
Maybe use Google satellelite and streetview for both places to get a feel for what they're like on foot?

Sadly they were all generated by AI, which was probably regurgitating a mashup of illegally (or at least immorally) copied guidebook content.
