Wife and I are brand new to travelling. In fact, we will be getting on our first plane here next month. Going to New York. We will be flying into Syracuse, but will be spending 2 days in NYC. Having no idea about tolls, traffic, etc, what would be the good location to stay at, where we could catch public transportaion into NYC?
new york city
Are you visiting anyplace other than NYC? If not, do you realize Syracuse is at least a 4-hour drive from NYC?
As far as where to stay, what else are you visiting from that place? A little more information would be very helpful.
Thanks and welcome to TravellersPoint.
Why are you flying to Syracuse instead of one of NYC's two airports? Syracuse is much closer to Buffalo.
My sister used to live in Far Rockaway, which is in Nassau County east of Brooklyn. She went to Manhattan (where she worked) via subway even though it required a train change because parking is impossible.
We are visiting a friend in Groton, but figured we couldn't go to New York, without going to NYC. This is our first trip on a plane, and literally the first time past Colorado. We may not get a chance to go that way again. But the main
reason for the visit is to visit the friend.

Try this Web site for information on how to get where you want to go:

Since you're flying into Syracuse I suspect you are visiting a friend in Groton, New York, instead of Groton, Connecticut. The Web site above suggests modes of transportation, including a bus that can take you into the center of Manhattan (Port Authority Bus Terminal) where hotels are readily accessible via subway, bus or short taxi ride. The major attractions are all accessible via public transportation.

Consult online travel agents, such as Booking.com, for hotel suggestions. Use their maps to see where the hotels are located. Pick ones near subway stations if you plan to use public transportation extensively, which I suggest. NYC has interesting neighborhoods, such as Greenwich Village, that are excellent to stroll around.
While you are in Groton, NY, try to drive up to Skaneateles (on the lake of the same name) and eat at THE KREBS at 53 West Genesee Street (Skaneateles, NY 13152) tel: (315) 685-1800. It is an experience you will never forget. Click here for THE KREBS web site We used to live north of Skaneateles (pronounced Skinnyatlas) and absolutely loved Krebs.
Enjoy your trip.
Thank you for all the advice/comments...Changing intinerary due to finances, but planning on visiting again...

The city of New York in the United States is usually called either New York City (NYC) or straight to New York (NY), the most populous city in the United States.

Those of us who live (or lived) in upper NY state appreciate people who use NYC instead of NY when talking about the city. There is a very large state of NY and it deserves recognition. I quickly learned that when I was young and said I was married to someone from NY because everyone immediately assumed he was from NYC and he was actually from upstate NY. We met and went to school in upstate NY and there are many lovely places to visit there including the Finger Lakes, Letchworth State Park (the Grand Canyon of the East), Lake George, Saratogan and Saratoga Springs and Niagra Falls among many others.
