Hi,
Stuck between Lake Placid, Cape Cod, and Newport for a summer (end of August) vacation with two children (7 and 3). We live in central Jersey and would go for three or four nights. I believe Lake Placid and Cape Cod are about 5 to 5-1/2 hours from us while Newport is about 4 to 4-1/2. Any suggestions? Thank you!

With young kids, Newport might be the best pick closer drive, kid-friendly beaches, and lots to explore without long travel. Cape Cod is great too but more spread out. Lake Placid is beautiful but more outdoorsy and less beachy. For a short, fun, manageable trip: Newport wins.

They're kids, they go where you go.
Closer to home, a zoo or aquarium?
Do you need a beach? If so, maybe go south??

Hi.
For things to do in Newport a quick Google search will give you suggestions. They have a casino and some old mansions. Middletown is nearby and has a beach.
When you drive in Rhode Island keep an eye on your speed limit. Many roads have signs that warn drivers that car license plates may be recorded and if speeding you may get a ticket in the mail. (Lots of warning signs!)
Battleship Cove, nearby Fall River, MA has an old battleship to tour.
Unless you are a vegetarian, "hot wieners” are a Rhode Island thing. Look it up.
Good luck.
