Hi,
I am 23, and am coming to the states for around a month in mid October. I obviously can't do it all, due to my time constraints. So I have chosen San Francisco and LA .
I was wondering if anyone can recommend some things I should definitely try do. Also would it be worth renting a car.
If anyone is considering a similar trip, it would be great to split car rental costs etc. and the company would be great.

You don't need a car in San Francisco. In fact, you will be much happier without one. Rely on MUNI (buses, light rail, and the world-famous cable cars!) to get around.
As for LA, I would say you probably would want to have a car, unless you plan on seeing the city by way of organized tours. You will want to make sure your driver's license will be honored here.
Otherwise, it's hard to recommend things without knowing anything about you. What are your interests? What kinds of things do you enjoy seeing?
Totally agree with bazzlevi on SF - the parking fees in SF would kill you! It's also a terrible way to see the city, and as bazzlevi says, the public trans is great.
Public trans in LA is just the opposite - that's why you need a car there, and it's also much much larger/spread out. Oct is great weather in both - you'll probably want to drive down to San Diego too.
I would drive down Highway #1 on your way to LA - great scenery/nude beaches, etc.
you are probably getting ready to leave soon. hire a car in SF when you are ready to go to LA and take the drive down the PCH. priceline.com you can rent a car for sometime as little as $15 per day or less if you pick up from the airport.
I have lived here for 20 years and I never ever tire of that drive- life changing!

I think I might end up hiring a car, that or taking a green tortoise bus.

The roads are very narrow in San Francisco, so there isn't much room to park. Some of San Francisco's attractions include a science museum called the Exploratorium, 2 huge Aquariums, the de Young Museum of art, Alcatraz island (where Al Capone was held), the Golden Gate Bridge, and China Town. Be aware that it is at least an 8-hour drive to get from LA to San Francisco.
